ISPE History and Background

The Society was founded in 1980 by a handful of people working on the front lines in the pharmaceutical industry who felt a void in their ability to meet and work with colleagues from other companies to improve efficiency. They decided to do something about it. They believed the world needed an organization that would deal with practical applications and information for technical professionals.

The aim of the group was to improve efficiency and best practice. Their vision that a forum was needed is borne out by the enormous expansion in ISPE membership over the intervening period, which extends beyond engineering to include very broad representation from pharmaceutical professionals, including a vital link with quality control and assurance personnel.

Moving Forward

As the Society enters its 26th year with 25,000 Members worldwide. ISPE continues to work to keep industry professionals informed of the latest technological and regulatory trends that are occurring in the marketplace.

All technical areas of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry are represented among the ISPE membership. Engineers, microbiologists, chemists, QA/QC, production, process development, pharmacists, regulatory and training personnel, academia, suppliers, and other professionals contribute their expertise to the industry through their participation in ISPE activities. Furthermore, the networking benefits of ISPE membership extend beyond the pharmaceutical industry. ISPE enables Members to develop contacts around the globe by providing a forum for beneficial interaction with government officials, contractors, vendor representatives, academics, and students all in the interest of offering practical solutions to everyday situations.

ISPE is committed to the advancement of the educational and technical efficiency of its members through forums for the exchange of ideas and practical experience.
